Mission & Interests
Goals: According to the ESBB's vision EMPOWERING BIOSHARING and mission "Advance biosharing for a better world through mobilising, inspiring, and educating the biobank community across EMEA", the aim is to meet the following goals in the field of biobanking and biopreservation of biological resources (human, animal, plant, microbial and environmental) within Europe, Middle-East, Africa, and beyond.
1) Identify issues encountered in the biobanking field and provide solutions.
2) Encourage and support high professional standards in biobanking.
3) Provide high value membership services in the biobanking field.
4) Encourage participation from a wide range of stakeholders in the biobanking field across the EMEA region.
5) Provide a strong united voice for biobankers to influence development of their field.
6) Partner with other key organizations involved with or related to biobanking.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: ESBB particularly targets the EU strategies "EU Health Strategy" and "EU Data Strategy". Furthermore, ESBB particularly targets the following EU legislative policies: "EU Health Policy" with legislation adoption in pharmaceuticals & medical devices (pharmacovigilance, falsified medicines, clinical trials) and Organs, blood, tissue and cells; "Blood, tissues, cells and organs"; "Cancer"; "Data Protection"; "Digital Health"; "Education and Training"; "Endocrine disruptors including human biomonitoring"; "European reference networks"; "Health data collection"; "Rare diseases"; and "Research and innovation as well as Research and innovation in health".
Communication Activities: The largest event is the "Europe Biobank Week" organized annually in partnership together with BBMRI-ERIC. In addition, ESBB is the international lead partner of the International Biobank Conference in Doha, Qatar in 2019 and 2021. ESBB's last communication activity with the EU was answering the survey on the EU Data Strategy and an ESBB position statement to the EU Data Strategy. Furthermore, ESBB's working group on GDPR was giving a public webinar on practical implementation of GDPR. ESBB leadership together with the European Human Biomonitoring community recently published the following article: Towards Harmonized Biobanking for Biomonitoring: A Comparison of Human Biomonitoring-Related and Clinical Biorepositories (in Biopreserv.
