Goals: The purpose of this Association is to uphold and promote the highest standards of fact-checking and promote media literacy for the public benefit. The Association and its members are committed to upholding the principles of freedom of expression. They will work to promote the public’s access to fact-checked trustworthy data and information and to educate the public in how to assess the veracity of information in the public sphere.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: EFCSN is interested in any policies or regulations "relevant to the mission of fact-checking and are compatible with a reputation for independence and impartiality". As of 2024, the organization has an interest in the implementation of the Digital Services Act and related codes of conduct, the proposal for a European Media Freedom Act, the Artificial Intelligence Act, or the European Action Plan for Democracy.
Communication Activities: The association has published two assessments of some very large online platforms and search engines implementation of the Code of Practice on Disinformation in the context of DSA, available in the EFCSN.com/news website. Along with EDMO and The European Parliament, it co-hosted the seminar “Fact-checking and beyond: Building
resilience for the 2024 European Elections” in the Parliament premises in November 2023.

Info Members: The EFCSN is an association of European organizations of fact-checking. As such, it has an elected 11-member governance body, plus a dedicated Policy Task Force of policy issues that includes other 11 members. All of them do this unpaid and only 2 people (the governance body member responsible for policy and the coordinator of the policy task force) dedicate 25% of their time to target European Union policies and legislation, while the other 20 dedicate around 20% to be informed, participate in meetings with stakeholders, and other EU-policy related issues.

Is Member Of: To be a verified member of EFCSN, independent fact-checking organizations with a demonstrated focus on one or more European countries have to go through an assessment process that includes an independent evaluation from two different academics working separately. The membership of the association is determined by that, but as of January the EFCSN has 31 verified members and another 21 organizations that are going through the assessment process.
