Cultural heritage safeguarded for society through high standards in the professional practice of Conservation-Restoration.
Our Mission
To organize, develop and promote, on a practical, scientific and cultural level, the profession of the Conservator-Restorer. To set standards and regulate practice at European level and enhance communication between and mobility of professionals. To strengthen the role and responsibilities of the Conservator-Restorer in relation to others in safeguarding cultural heritage.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Directive (EU) 2018/958 — proportionality test before adoption of new regulation of professions; E.C.C.O. works towards the legal regulation of the profession of the conservator-restorer as working in the public interest. In some EU countires this protection is already in place completely (Slovakia, Italy) or partially (Greece, Slovenia, Germany, France,...) and should be extended to all EU countires
NACE review 2.1 - E.C.C.O. has proposed to Eurostat in 2018 a reorganisiation of the section S regarding the economical activities of the cultural heritage sector. This has contributed to the ongoing NACE review 2.1.
ESCO Platform DG Employment; E.C.C.O. wants to update, make visible and discrete the conservator-restorer occupation competences profile
EU Council resolution on the EU work plan for culture 2023-2026; E.C.C.O. is interested to implement the priority areas for the conservator-restorer profession
Communication Activities: Regarding Directive (EU) 2018/958 E.C.C.O. has published:
- Competences for the access to the profession of conservation-restoration;
- Professional Guidelines: 1. Profession, 2. Ethics, 3. Education;
We organize with through our members the
European Days of Conservation-restoration - campaign raising awareness about the profession held in person and on social media every 2nd week of october since 2018;
Regarding NACE E.C.C.O. has contributed to the following pubblications:
- On the Classification of the Cultural Heritage Sector within NACE;
Regarding CHARTER Alliance ECCO has contributed to the following pubblication prior tp the project:
- Fostering cooperation in the European Union on skills, training, and knowledge transfer in cultural heritage professions;
- Executive Summary EU Open Method Coordiantion in Skills, training and knowledge transfer in heritage professions;
- A new European LAndscape for heritage professions, Executive Summary;

Complementary Information: E.C.C.O. works on a strictly volontary basis. The only paid position is the office administrator. All other costs are related to expenses and reimbursements, mainly travel and accomodations costs. In case of involvement in funded European projects single tasks or specific jpobs related to the project may be paid.

Info Members: The committe is composed of 11 persons, from which 10 are working on voluntary basis, 1 is employed full time for the duration of the CHARTER project. Different persons are working according to different working groups on tasks related to activities described under heading 9 (especially NACE and JPI - CH); this is refelcted as an abstraction with the 2 persons working around 10% of full time in the boxes above.
We do not have direct access to the Europarliament premises, nor are we participating in any of the listed EU structures and platforms.
