Mission & Interests

Goals: The European Circular Bioeconomy Fund (ECBF) is the first venture fund exclusively dedicated to the (circular) bioeconomy. We invest in visionary European entrepreneurs who are driving the shift from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy. ECBF's investing industry verticals are AgTech, FoodTech, Industrial Biotech, and Biobased Packaging and Construction Materials. ECBF aims to catalyze the transition towards a sustainable future by investing in biobased growth-stage companies with high potential for innovation, favorable returns, and sustainable impact. As a growth-stage venture capital fund, ECBF syndicates with private and public investors to bring circular technologies and bio-products to market, offering flexible financing tools from equity to mezzanine. With a total of EUR 300mio under management, ECBF is focused on deploying capital on attractive and impactful companies based in the EU-27 or 16-HORIZON 2020 associated countries.

Main EU Legislative Proposals: ECBF main business is investing venture capital in growth-stage companies. It is not dedicated to political activities, but it is affected by and contributes to the EU policy goals with its investing activities. Therefore, feedback and involvement in certain policy areas are sometimes part of the collaborative stewardship, particularly with regard to SFDR implementation. European Green Deal. Bioeconomy is recognized as a key component of achieving transitioning towards a circular economy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Bioeconomy Strategy. To maximize the potential of bio-based industries. Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Our investment scope is affected by and support sustainable agriculture and forestry, which are essential components of the bioeconomy. Circular Economy Action Plan: Our investments aim to reduce waste and increasing the use of renewable resources such as biomass. Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. Our investments need to comply with the high susainability standards to promote sustainable land use, protect ecosystems, and enhance biodiversity- Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU).
