Mission & Interests

Goals: The European Biodiesel Board also known as EBB, is a non-profit organisation established in January 1997. EBB aims to promote the use of biodiesel in the European Union, at the same time, grouping the major EU biodiesel producers. To achieve its aims, EBB: - represents its members to the institutions of the European Union and other international organizations - promotes scientific, technological, economic, legal and research activities - collects, analyses and disseminates information - studies problems confronted by the biodiesel industry and suggests solutions at economic, political, legal, institutional and technical levels.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: • ILUC (RED and FQD) – core business • The 2020 climate and energy package, including: o European Energy Security Strategy • Animal feed – EU regulation and safety monitoring • Revision of the Energy Taxation Directive 2003/96 • Monitoring: o Waste hierarchy, o State Aid to biofuels sector o EU Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), o EU strategy to reduce CO2 emissions from cars, o EU Common Agricultural Policy – for availability of biodiesel raw material o EU project aiming at the promotion of biofuels use, such as:  in aviation – Biofuels Flightpath 2020,  HORIZON 2020 • International trade-related issues: o Customs issues-classification of biodiesel blends and Rules of Origin o EBB takes part in European Commission’s public briefings on international trade relations, called “Civil Society Dialogue Meetings”. • Technical issues (product specifications, sustainability aspects of biodiesel and biofuels etc.): o REACH o Life-Cycle Greenhouse Gas assessment of biofuels (JEC) o IPCC/BAT Directive (?) o Biodiesel and diesel standardisation in the EU (CEN) o other? Renewable energy is a key concern for all levels of EU authority. EBB actively endeavoured to make the voice of the biodiesel industry heard in the discussion regarding the framework for post-2020 policies
Communication Activities: EBB projects: • RBO – Register of Biofuels Origination – a certification tool for the advanced biofuels generated from waste feedstock. This industry-led initiative is expected to be highly beneficial to raise the reputation and credibility of European produced advanced biodiesel both within the EU and abroad. Projects in which EBB takes part in as a partner association: ESBF – European Sustainable Biofuels Forum European Biofuels Technology Platform (EBTP) - Trade monitoring (anti-dumping already imposed) On the side of international activities, EBB has continued to successfully defend our members against the recurrence of the dumping and countervailing duties imposed on biodiesel imports from selected third countries (United States, Argentina and Indonesia).
