Mission & Interests
Goals: AEIDL is rooted in local development and the social economy. Its purpose is to learn from and foster community-led innovation to revitalise local communities and bring about a more cohesive Europe.
AEIDL is actively engaged in the formulation of EU policy recommendations and the organisation of policy forums with EU officials and political representatives such as MEPs in order to advance integrated, innovative, sustainable and inclusive local development policies across the EU. (see www.aeidl.eu/forum/)
Through EC service contracts, we deliver, jointly with partners, key programmes such as the EU CAP Network and FAMENET, and have delivered in the past their predecessors ENRD and FARNET. These programmes, as well as our new role in supporting the EU Rural Pact, aim to make EU policies better known by local stakeholders across the EU, but also provide a bottom-up avenue for them to feed into the EU decision-making process.

Communication Activities: AEIDL is frequently engaged in communicating with the EU and advocating better EU policies for local development.
For instance, we recently organised a Rural Digitalisation Forum and the DESIRA Final Conference, where we invited key European Commission and Joint Research Centre officials as well as MEPs and CoR members to discuss a new roadmap for rural digitalisation that highlight the existing gaps in EU support on rural digitalisation. We carried out similar activities involving EU officials in several events we organised, for example under the MOVING project (quality products in mountain areas, among others) or the SHERPA project (next steps for the Long Term Vision for Rural Areas). We also provide specific policy recommendations such as our response, on behalf of the BEATLES project partners to the EC public consultation on sustainable food systems.
More widely, AEIDL regularly produces in-depth analysis, think pieces and recommendations that we disseminate via our social media and mailing lists to EU and national decision makers and officials. (see www.aeidl.eu/news/category/opinions)

Is Member Of: AEIDL consists of individuals, namely experts in local development, some of whom helped set up this organisation in 1998 to advocate for better EU policies for local development. We are not as such a network of national bodies, but a pan-European NGO whose members are individuals keen to support AEIDL on a voluntary basis. In turn, many of our members are affiliated with other networks such as LDNet, which is another voluntary organisation of local development experts.
For more information about our members, we refer you to the latest version of our statutes: https://www.ejustice.just.fgov.be/tsv_pdf/2022/12/13/22147384.pdf.
Organisation Members: AEIDL does not belong to any other organisation, however we have close working relationships with other networks and organisations active in local development and local innovation.
