Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: In a letter to Mr. Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, EICC Secretary General Sunil Prasad drew his attention of the shadow army of China’s Communist rulers and its extensive spying machinery at work within the European Union that seem to have infiltrated various spheres of society, business and even institutions across Europe. Secretary General warned EU that “China’s operations in Brussels extend beyond scholars and journalists; they encompass the active engagement of some former officials of EU institutions. [China's Magic weapon and Challenge for Brussels-8/11/2023:-received reply from EEAS.ASIAPAC.6-1/12/2023]. In a letter to Ms. Stella Kyriakides, EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, EICC warned EU of likely disruption in export of milk and milk products from EU to India due to revised veterinary health certificate (VHC). EICC Secretary General urged EU and Ireland to engage in further consultations with Indian government to expedite a long-term solution to explore the possibility of either establishing a mutually acceptable Veterinary Health Certificate (VHC) or eliminating the need for VHC altogether. ["Milk & Milk Products" export and import between EU and India-2/08/2023:-received reply from Directorate General for Trade, Unit D.3 -31/10/2023]. In a letter to the EU High Representative Mr Borrell, EICC Secretary General said Pakistan is on life support and no amount of EU’s “Oxygen GSP” would save it. He said that given the state of the affair in Pakistan today, extension of European Union’s trade privilege to Pakistan is benefitting neither and in fact the special treatment may have made things far worse. [EU’s GSP-Policy and Pakistan-24/07/2023:-received reply from EEAS.ASIAPAC.2-17/08/2023]. In a letter to EU High Representative Mr. Borrell, EICC Secretary General urged EU to investigate and prosecute radical Khalistan supporters in the EU countries who provide financial and material support to Khalistan terror groups operating in India. [Khalistan Activities on EU Soil-31/03/2023:-received reply from EEAS.ASIAPAC.6-28/04/2023]. On EU´s competition policy, EICC together with AmCham EU & other signatory organisations representing key EU trade & investment partners, signed and released a Joint statement on 4th April 2023, bringing attention of the EU about significant ambiguities of the EU Proposal on the draft Implementing Regulation [IR] for the EU’s Foreign Subsidies Regulation. The statement identified the main areas in which further refinement of the Draft IR is essential to create a framework that is both legally proportionate and operationally workable for companies and the Commission alike. EICC held webinar on 18 July 2023 to discuss “Impact of the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CABM) on India's industry”. The CABM, part of the EU's "Fit for 55 in 2030" package, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030. Key sectors in India like steel will be significantly impacted by the tax, potentially leading to a decline in demand. India's strategies to deal with CBAM are limited, including challenging it as violating the Paris Agreement's common but differentiated responsibilities principle. India must swiftly formulate & implement its carbon taxation measures aligned with principles of the Paris Agreement to safeguard its industries from potential adverse effects. EICC organized seminar on “EU-India Cooperation on Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future”, in Ahmedabad, India, on February 21, 2024. Seminar focused on emerging technologies, trends, and opportunities for collaboration & innovation in renewable energy with EU countries. It emphasized importance of exploring sustainable development solutions for India's rising energy demand. Seminar concluded that strengthening collaboration with EU could be useful to achieve India's carbon emission objectives.
Communication Activities: In 2023, Europe India Chamber of Commerce [EICC] diversified its activities through following events & campaigns. EICC held webinar on 14 April 2023 to promote “EU-India cooperation in sensitive technologies”. Webinar discussed establishment of Trade and Technology Council (TTC) to provide New Delhi access to advanced EU technologies and set standards in critical areas like 5G & artificial intelligence. It underlined importance of TTC future role in promoting strategic technologies, green energy, trade, investment, and resilient value chains, reducing dependence on China for critical technologies. Participants praised TTC’s mandate with strong framework, political guidance & accountability, technical work structure and decision-making facilitation. EICC and European Policy Centre held an Open Policy Dialogue on "EU-India Relations and the Emerging World Order: Strengthening Ties for Common Interest" in Brussels on 9 October 2023. Dialogue, which took place within a month of India hosting G20 summit in New Delhi, discussed strategic challenges and opportunities in EU-India relations, state of FTA negotiations, India's digital muscle vs. Europe's regulations, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, India's role as a potential peace broker, EU's Indo-Pacific Strategy and India, India's G20 presidency and India's growth & race for economic leadership in the Global South. Debate concluded that geopolitical landscape is witnessing tectonic transformations, with events like Ukraine war and Covid-19 health crisis pushing nations towards self-reliance. EICC held Webinar on 15 November 2023, to discuss “Progress in India-EU free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations”. The agreement aims to secure market openings in service sectors such as banking, insurance, retail trade, business services, government procurement and intellectual property rights. The EU also aims to go "deep" into non-trade issues, such as government procurement, environment and human rights. Webinar concluded that the EU's thrust in services, investment, IPRS and other miscellaneous concerns can best be appreciated through robust collaboration in the service industry. The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and EICC held a webinar on 22 December 2023 to discuss and strengthen EU collaboration on empowering India's Medium and Small Enterprises (MSMEs). With over 63 million MSMEs in India, these businesses face challenges like limited credit access, lack of collateral and high interest rates. Webinar aimed to unite MSMEs, policymakers & ecosystem enablers to address issues, strengthen EU cooperation, and foster financially robust, competitive enterprises aligned with India's self-reliant economy. In January 2024, EICC has launched 'Doing Business in India' survey, to gauge views of EU companies on India's business culture and progress. Survey aims to strengthen economic cooperation between India and the EU, focusing on improving the ease of doing business. India has made significant progress in this area, making it the fastest-growing major economy. Over 6000 EU companies are established in India and are keen to enhance investments and partner with Indian organizations. Ongoing survey’s preliminary data reveals that legal & regulatory barriers are the largest barriers faced by EU businesses in India.
