Mission & Interests

Goals: EMERGENCY provides free, high-quality healthcare to victims of war, poverty and landmines, alongside building hospitals and training local medical staff. Founded in 1994, EMERGENCY has treated over 11 million people in 18 different countries and currently operates in Afghanistan, Eritrea, Iraq, Italy, Sierra Leone, Sudan and Uganda. EMERGENCY offers high-quality medical and surgical care; guarantees treatment to anyone in need of assistance, with no discrimination on the basis of political, ideological or religious beliefs; trains local staff thoroughly, with the intent of handing over all facilities to the local health authorities as soon as self-sustainability can be achieved. EMERGENCY also promotes a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights. EMERGENCY's work around the world is made possible thanks to the help of thousands of volunteers and supporters.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The aim of EMERGENCY’s work in Brussels is to influence/collaborate with EU decision-makers and officials to ensure that EU policies affecting least developed countries have positive impact on the lives of those most in need. EMERGENCY’s work includes various policy areas: health, development and migration policy, humanitarian aid, health in least development countries.
Communication Activities: EMERGENCY’s representatives attend conferences, public hearings, committees, events in Italy, Europe and around the world. The most important activities in 2023 were: - Online and in person meetings with staff of the European Commission, with a focus on INTPA, ECHO and HOME, and - Members of the European Parliament; - Meetings with African Union high level representatives; - Participation to the 24th Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly of Health Ministers of ECOWAS in Guinea Bissau; - Participation to the World Health Assembly in Geneva; - Participation as speaker to the World Health Summit in Berlin; - Active participation in the People Vaccine Alliance, advocating for global access to COVID-19 vaccines therapeutics and diagnostics and for the prioritization of people over profit in the negotiation for the Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention Treaty; - Production and dissemination of the report “COVID-19 Response in Africa and the COVAX Mechanism”; - Participation in the 2023 European Humanitarian Forum; - Production and dissemination of the report “Access to Care in Afghanistan: Perspectives from Afghan people in 10 provinces”; - Hearing before the Constitutional Affairs Commission and the Transport Commission of the Italian Chamber of Deputies on search and rescue in the Central Mediterranean in Rome; - Hearing before the Foreign Affairs Commission and the Defence Commission of the Italian Chamber of the Deputies on Italian international military missions in Rome; - Participation in the meeting of the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean at the European Parliament in Brussels on search and rescue in the Central Mediterranean; - Hearing at the European Economic and Social Committee on the revision of the anti-trafficking directive in Brussels; - Hearing with the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament in Lampedusa; - Participation in a SAR event organized by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Berlin; - Online and in-person meeting with the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe on search and rescue in the Central Mediterranean; - Meeting with the Frontex Consultative Forum during their field mission in Italy
