Mission & Interests

Goals: The European Geosciences Union is the leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space science research in Europe. It aims to foster fundamental geoscience research, alongside applied research that addresses key societal and environmental challenges. The EGU publishes a number of diverse scientific journals, which use an innovative open access format (https://www.egu.eu/publications/open-access-journals/). It also honours scientists with a number of awards and medals. The annual EGU General Assembly is the largest and most prominent European geosciences event, attracting more than 16,000 scientists from all over the world in the year 2019 (https://www.egu2019.eu/) and 26,000 individuals to its 2020 online event (https://egu2020.eu/). The EGU also supports effective science communication, hosting a number of outreach grants and activities that members and science journalists can get involved with to increase this diffusion of scientific knowledge to the public and policymakers.

Main EU Legislative Proposals: The EGU has held a number of science-policy events involving both scientists and policymakers. Following each event, a document highlighting the issues and outcomes of the event was published and shared widely. The EGU has also made statements about the importance of science research funding. While the EGU has not been involved directly involved with specific EU legislative proposals or policies, these documents, statements or events may have indirectly influenced those working on them.
