Mission & Interests

Goals: ECoD NPO was founded in 2021 by The Innovation in Politics Institute, an independent and non-partisan organisation that identifies, develops and implements innovations in the private and public sector in order to strengthen democracy in Europe. As a non-profit organisation, European Capital of Democracy’s mission is to promote democratic governance and to strengthen social cohesion by fostering and expanding participation and awareness across the Council of Europe member states. For this purpose, a European Capital of Democracy will be designated every year. In cooperation with civil society and citizens, the designated city will curate, organise, and implement a Programme Year, featuring a wide range of activities and events. Visitors from all over Europe are invited to join and to participate.

ACT NOW Youth Network ("Connecting the dots" Erasmus+), LocalLabs ("Innovating local communities", Social Media channels Monthly webinars with ECoD Citizens' Jury (1/3 participants under the age of 25) Art of Democracy format & yearly track Truth, Lies & Democracy - mal-, mis- and disinformation hackathon format & yearly track Ad 3., 5. European Capital of Democracy Initiative (yearly Call for cities and ECoD City Network / CERV Network of Towns funded) Ad 4. ECoD Citizens' Jury (CoE-wide group of engaged citizens + collaboration platform), currently 4,000+ Europeans to engage and participate in activities related to pressing European matters (surveys, online trainings, selection and support of European Capital of Democracy etc.) Ad 5., 6. ACT NOW Mayors' Network and annual Conference, supporting local politicians in tackling current challenges they face, such as migration, climate crisis and eroding social cohesion Ad 7. Annual Innovation in Politics Awards (in cooperation with the Innovation in Politics Institute) recognise European politicians. A citizens' Jury comprising over 1,000 Europeans evaluates the projects to determine the finalists and winners in the Awards' nine categories.
