Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: CEDPO is keenly focused on all aspects of digital regulation, with a special emphasis on data protection. It has actively engaged in discussions and negotiations surrounding the General Data Protection Regulation since 2011 and continues to dedicate efforts to this critical area.
Communication Activities: It was founded with the aim of being a interlocutor to European policy-makers and Data Protection Authorities in the context of the discussion, adoption and implementation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It successfully became a proactive force, bringing forwards concrete proposals that played a part in the shaping of the current legislation, in particular with regards to the definition of the position and role of the Data Protection Officer. CEDPO regularly releases position papers and statements on data protection and digital matters. These contributions contained precise, balanced and practicable provisions, informed by the rich and diverse experiences of CEDPO’s member associations, which have a hands-on knowledge of the problematics surrounding the role and position of the DPO, as well as the daily challenges that they face. CEDPO contribution to the European data protection did not stop with the adoption of the GDPR in 2016, though. It has already published a detailed analysis of the right to access in European countries and in the new European regulation, and continues to bring the DPO’s vision in this ongoing debate, for instance by participating in the “Fab Labs” organised by the Article 29 Working Party. CEDPO also took part in the modernisation of the Council of Europe’s Convention 108 (“Convention for the Protection of Individuals with Regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data”), by advocating for a better recognition of the crucial role that DPO play in data protection nowadays. All of the organisation’s contributions to legislative and practical aspects of data protection can be found on its website (http://www.cedpo.eu/publications).
