Mission & Interests

Goals: San Patrignano is the largest residential drug rehabilitation community in Europe, providing drug free treatments and social reintegration options to people completely free of charge. Comunità San Patrignano was founded in 1978 and since then it has welcomed more than 26.000 individuals suffering from drug addiction without any religious, ideological or social discrimination and completely free of charge. Nowadays the community welcome approximately 800 people with an average age of 28 years old. The number of people entering in the community is stable almost every year and is around 350/400 people. Among them there are minors, pregnant women and mothers with kids, San Patrignano also welcomes offenders in alternative setting from prison, offering a real option for treatment, recovery and social reintegration. Communication Activities: Since 2008, San Patrignano has been organizing an event focused on prevention and antidrug themes, WeFree Days; almost 2800 students participate in each edition. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to stop this activity, but we still reach out to different initiatives for children up to 19 years of age with prevention activities. Contemporarily, conferences are organized to discuss topics connected to adolescence, with the participation of national and international speakers. http://www.wefree.it/cosa-facciamo/wefree_days/ Representatives of San Patrignano participated actively as speakers in International fora, contributing with their expertise in the social field, particularly regarding prevention, treatment, recovery, and social reintegration. As San Patrignano is a member of the Civil Society Forum on Drugs (consultative body for the EU Commission) and in consultative status with ECOSOC since 1997, we actively collaborate and contribute to the work of the EU and UN: We organize side events every year at the annual session of the CND in Vienna and participate as speakers at numerous side events organized by Member States and other NGOs. In 2023, we organized a side event in collaboration with OAS/CICAD on the alternative to incarceration and social reintegration of justice-involved individuals with substance use disorders. In 2016, we attended and contributed to the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Drugs 2016 in New York, organizing a side event called "The Social and Economic Advantages of Investing in Recovery." All the previous side events we collected during the years can be found on the UNODC website; We welcome frequent study visits from Governmental Delegations and NGOs. Since 2014, San Patrignano has realized an International Workshop (three to four times a year), Lectures, and Experiential learning labs for social workers, social practitioners working on addiction, researchers, and NGOs interested in the rehabilitation and social reinsertion model of the biggest community in Europe.
