Mission & Interests
Goals: The CMFE was founded in 2004 to strengthen the participation of the “Third Media Sector” in European discussion and decision-making processes at a moment when freedom of expression and free access to information are increasingly endangered by the consequences of concentration in the media field. It is a network of policy experts, organizations and federations from now 26 European countries, which aim to support the role of Community Media on the European level.
The “Third Media Sector” is made up of non profit-making media serving a local community and has as such a clearly distinct identity alongside the national public service sector and private commercial media. The CMFE is a common platform for networks, national federations and projects active within this sector. On the one hand, it enables the participating organisations to bring up their concerns on a European and international level and, on the other hand, it represents a channel through which European institutions can s (...)

Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE) was partnering with the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ), ARTICLE 19, Media Diversity Institute (MDI), Croatian Journalists’ Association (CJA), Cooperazione per lo Sviluppo dei Paesi Emergenti (COSPE) and Community Media Institute (COMMIT) in the Europe-wide campaign Media Against Hate to counter hate speech and discrimination in the media, while maintaining respect for freedom of expression. The project was financially supported by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) Programme of the European Union, by the Broadcasting Board of Governors (U.S.) and by the Media & Internet Division of the Council of Europe.
Actually CMFE is partner of the AMIF-funded project New Neighbours with the aim to highlight the positive social and economic contributions that are made by migrants and refugees throughout communities across Europe. By promoting direct participation in media production and intercultural dynamics, it is hoped to foster tolerance and acceptance for migrants and refugees in EU member states. New Neighbours will work with public service media, community media and civil society organisations to challenge stereotypes and expose commonly held myths, placing migrant voices at the heart of discussions on migration and delivering innovative messaging in order to help promote the integration of migrants into local communities.
New Neighbours is coordinated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) partnering with the MDI, COSPE and COMMIT. New Neighbours will raise awareness through the use of factual programming produced by PSM, social media-based campaigns and community media productions. In addition to this, it will build stronger links between media and community organisations, which in turn, will improve the flow of information between one another, helping to deliver the message to a wider and more diverse audience.
