Mission & Interests

Goals: The Collaborative Laboratory (CoLAB) for the Atlantic (+ATLANTIC), formally approved by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation on January 30th 2018 and created in May 2018, targets the societal challenges and agenda put forward by the “Atlantic Interactions” High level meetings promoted by Atlantic International Research Centre. +ATLANTIC is a non-profit private association comprising, 13 Portuguese members (6 enterprises, 3 universities and 4 non-profit associations of scientific nature or public utility) from different regions of the country and different technological backgrounds. +ATLANTIC aims at advancing knowledge on the interactions between the Ocean, Atmosphere, Climate and Energy in the Atlantic, with an integrated approach from deep sea to space. By developing a better understanding of the Atlantic, we can promote blue growth and highly qualified employment.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: +ATLANTIC aims to have direct or indirect communication with the EU institutions concerning legislative proposals or policies in the following domains: - Space policy with particular emphasis on the Copernicus programme, development and governance of small satellite programmes and constellations as well as Space based applications and their application to the various domains of the Ocean (e.g. their recognition as suitable decision support tools to fisheries assessment, monitoring and control; biodiversity assessment; prediction of fast developing events and catastrophic events) - Common fisheries policy - Aquaculture policy - Sustainable blue economy (in particular criteria to assess the blue economy) - Marine and coastal environment and in particular the Marine Strategy Framework Directive including the issues related to definition and monitoring of Marine Protected Areas and Marine Litter In these last four bullets, +ATLANTIC aims to influence policies with respect to the recognition of and adoption of combinations of AI, numerical models and in situ and space remote sensing as suitable decision support tools for to support policy definition, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. Finally, +ATLANTIC aims to engage in dialogue concerning the Destination Earth initiative of the European Commission with an emphasis on the Ocean aspects of the initiative.
