Mission & Interests

Goals: The Climate Parliament is an international multi-partisan network of legislators combating climate change worldwide. It is ultimately politicians who have the mandate whether we make the necessary changes in policy and budgets in time to prevent a global climate breakdown. While governments and ministers change, cross-party groups of legislators can maintain consistent engagement, helping to build political will for government action. The Climate Parliament brings together like-minded groups of climate active parliamentarians to work towards a global transition to renewable energy. The Climate Parliament aims for equality between genders and is inclusive of all minorities.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Parliamentary Action on Renewable Energy. Three-year programme to build capacity among legislators from Africa and Small Island Developing States on climate and renewable energy issues including community energy, large-scale generation and sustainable transport. Programme was funded by the Directorate General of International Partnerships and delivered in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation. In the context of this programme, we organised a delegation of African MPs to Brussels and The Hague that held meetings with Members of the European Parliament and high-level EU officials, including the Commissioner of International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen.
Communication Activities: 76 virtual parliamentary roundtables organised in 2020-2022 as part of the Parliamentary Action on Renewable Energy project. These brought together groups of parliamentarians from anglophone and francophone Africa, the MENA region and Small Island Developing States in online webinars to discuss specific themes of the climate crisis with experts in the field. A video and description of the project were published on the website of the EU Commission. A map of green ambition was developed containing relevant information about climate targets for the MPs. An in-person meeting of 100 MPs was organised in Luxor, Egypt, prior to COP27.
Inter-institutional or Unofficial Groupings: Unofficial groupings
