Yhdistyksen perusajatus on, että kannattava ja kestävä liiketoiminta on tehokkain keino vastata globaaleihin ympäristöhaasteisiin. Tarkoituksensa toteuttamiseksi yhdistys: - kokoaa yhteen yhdistyksen tavoitteita edistäviä yksityisen ja julkisen sektorin organisaatioita sekä yksittäisiä henkilöitä - kokoaa ja jakaa jäsenilleen tietoa globaaleista ympäristötrendeistä ja tekee vertailuja muiden maiden parhaista käytännöistä - käynnistää yhdistyksen tarkoitusta tukevia kehityshankkeita - tekee ehdotuksia ministeriöille, komissiolle ja julkisille organisaatioille innovaatiojärjestelmän ja tutkimusohjelmien
