Mission & Interests

Goals: Civilscape is a federation of NGOs, public instutions and economic entities dealing with landscape planning, landscape protection and landscape management. The European network is dedicated to the European Landscape Convention and has been approved as a participative international NGO by the Council of Europe. CIVILSCAPE has members from 32 countries. The main goals of Civilscape can be summed up in five key words: RESPONSIBILITY: We all have a great responsibility for our landscapes, for their sustainable development, cultural and natural wealth and the social wellbeing of their inhabitants. To care for the landscape is our mission. CIVIL ENGAGEMENT: Landscape is our responsibility – therefore we as citizens of a democratic society shall play an important role in all decision making processes concerning our landscapes, the way our landscapes are developed and how they are managed. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Energy Policy, Renewable Energies, Martime Landscapes, Environment Impact Assessment, Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, Funding and Policy for Cultural Heritage, Territorial and Social Cohesion
Communication Activities: With the EU it is e.g. active since 2012 in the European Maritime Days and European Year of the Cultural Heritage 2018 (EYCH2018) and the follow up processes. CIVILSCAPE was in the expert group for the European Year of the Cultural Heritage 2018. CIVILSCAPE is member to the Commission's expert group on cultural heritage. As a legacy of the year CIVILSCAPE started a joined initiative leading the campaign Decade of Action for Landscape in Europe 2018-2027. In 2023 the decade activities focus on landscapes and forest contributing to the up-coming forest strategy on national and EU level. In 2024 the decade will focus on landscapes of war and peace. CIVILSCAP is organizing its event series of "Landscape Forums", regional events on landscape policy and research in the various Interreg-Regions with participants from the civil society, academia, regional and national governments. Such Landscape Forum events address around 100 participants each. Since CIVILSCAPE started this events in 2010, in everage 5-6 events were successfully held with various partner in various European regions. During COVID crisis the event switched to digital formats. Since 2022 we organise 2-3 landscape forum events. CIVILSCAP is also actively involved in a number of research and disseniation projects under differrent EU funding schemes, llike FP7, Interreg-C or Erasmus+ Civilscape has a close co-operation with the Council of Europe on aspectes of landscape and heritage policy.

Organisation Members: CIVILSCAPE is member of the European Heritage Alliance and contributes to the network activities. CIVILSCAPE has been member of the European Year of Citizens 2013 Alliance and played an active role to involve their national and regional member organisations in the national coalitions. CIVILSCAPE closely co-operates with UNISCAPE, the network of universities and research institutes for landscape research.
