Mission & Interests
Goals: Civil Society Europe is the coordination of civil society organisations (CSOs) at the EU level. We are currently composed of 22 platforms and networks of CSOs among the most representative CSOs active at EU level in a wide variety of areas, such as civic participation, social rights, environmental rights, transparency, volunteering, youth, the fight against racism, anti-poverty, and the rights of persons with disabilities. CSE works towards regenerating the European project around the shared values of equality, solidarity, inclusiveness and democracy. Through its work, CSE contributes to EU and national institutions’ recognition of the essential role and value of independent and plural CSOs in building and nurturing a democratic society based on fundamental rights. We work to create the conditions for the development of a strong and independent civil society voice, an effective, open, and structured civil dialogue at EU level, and a thriving and enabling civic space across the Union.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Civil Society Europe (CSE) works towards the promotion and implementation of structured civil dialogue at EU level. In this context, CSE follows: citizenship issues; the implementation and promotion of fundamental rights and the rule of law, in particular as they relate to civic space; issues that are of pertinence to the implementation of Article 11 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) and the recognition and role of civil society organisations, for instance in the review or definition of the EU agenda; and legislative proposals or policies such as the European Democracy Action Plan, the Defence of Democracy Package, the Multiannual Financial Framework, financial rules and EU funding, the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Package, the Transparency Register, the follow-up of the Conference on the Future of Europe (including developments regarding a possible Convention to revise the EU Treaties), the European Recovery Package, the Ukraine Facility, and the proposal for a European Cross-Border Association Statute. CSE is also coordinating a joint “Civil Society for EU” campaign in the framework of the 2024 European Parliament elections, and is involved in a Horizon 2020 project titled “Enlightened trust in governance” (EnTrust).
Communication Activities: CSE contributes to EU policy discussions through its four Working Groups (which involve CSE members and other relevant civil society partners): Civic Space and Fundamental Rights, Civil Society State of the Union (which monitors the follow-up of the Conference on the Future of Europe/CoFoE), Funding (for civil society), and Communication. CSE also coordinates a task force on the National Recovery and Resilience Plans, a task force on the Defence of Democracy Package, and a coalition on European Cross-Border Associations.
