Mission & Interests

Goals: At CDT Europe, we work to increase equality, amplify voices, and promote human rights in European level law and policy debates. We champion policies, laws, and technical designs that protect against invasive, discriminatory, and exploitative uses of new technologies. We work on the discriminatory impact of algorithms and participation in online debates. CDT Europe is closely following European-level legislative files such as the Digital Services Act. CDT Europe insists that online platforms be transparent, accountable, and respect human rights. We also advocate that regulation should set limits on the collection and use of personal information and give people greater control. CDT Europe also works at the European-level to ensure that people are free from unwarranted surveillance. In line with international human rights law standards, we advocate that government surveillance should have strict, independent oversight and checks against bias.

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Digital Services Act Digital Markets Act European Democracy Action Plan Upcoming law on online political advertising Terrorist Content Online Regulation: CDT has written several blogposts and held meetings with MEPs on this Regulation, focused on free expression E-Evidence Regulation and Directive: CDT has written several papers on these pieces of draft legislation. E-Privacy Regulation: CDT submitted two analyses and blogposts for the attention of Members of the European Parliament. Communication Activities: We have responded to EU consultations in the area of Artificial Intelligence, the Digital Services Act, the European Democracy Action Plan, the proposed CSA Regulation. Our position papers are all available on the website provided.We engage with MEPs across these files and others where people's rights are at risk in relation to tech law and policy proposals.

Complementary Information: The annual budget for CDT Europe Office (registered as an AISBL under Belgian law) is listed above. This covers the costs of three full time staff, some consultancies fees for office management and accountancy and activity costs.

Info Members: There are three full time staff members in our Europe Office, two consultants and two interns. Colleagues from our HQ input to some of our policy papers but the main policy and advocacy work is done directly through our office in Brussels. We are in the course of hiring new staff members who should be in place by 2024 which will bring our staff numbers up to 5 full time.

Is Member Of: CDTE is not a membership organisation. We are currently supported financially via our U.S. HQ , as well as by a number of Foundations. CDT Europe only accepts foundation grants and to a limited extent government grants. Our HQ has support from a variety of foundations, research institutions, companies and organisations.
