Mission & Interests

Goals: The Capital Cities & Regions Network (CCRN) is the informal network of the capital cities and regions of the European Union's (EU) and the European Economic Area’s (EEA) Member States (MS). In 2002, the CCRN members came together to defend their common interests at EU level and voice the need for a distinct urban dimension in EU cohesion policy. Since then the CCRN has elaborated various positions concerning Cohesion Policy. Capital cities and regions, because of their complexity, the role they play as motors of growth and the sub-regional disparities they face, are unquestionably laboratories for territorial cohesion. Capital Cities and Regions are at the forefront of cultural, economic, and political activity in the EU Member States. At the same time, they face social and economic disparities where extreme poverty, social exclusion and wealth coexist. Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Cohesion policy, Regional and urban development, Integrated territorial investments, Metropolitan areas, Internal market
Communication Activities: CCRN has been present at the European Week of Regions and Cities for several years. The network organized "The Capital Cities and Regions in the Green Transition" workshop in 2020, the event was co-organized by the European Commission - DG Regio and the Committee of the Regions. Workshop "Capital Cities and Regions in the Digital Transition" was organised in 2021, youth policy was presented in 2022. "Rethinking post-industrial transition in cities and regions" was the workshop organised by CCRN in 2023. Through its members CCRN has been involved in public consultations on DSA - Digital Services Act as proposed by the EC on 15. 12. 2020 and other topics too. In 2021 we remained active in the sphere of DSA, where we have contacted relevant MEPs. In 2024 we engaged in meetings with MEPs and DG Regio too, mainly on post 2027 cohesion policy and involvement/participation of capital cities and regions in national RRPs. Several position papers were prepared by the network, the latest are: - position on the future of cohesion policy - reaction to the 9th Cohesion Report.

Info Members: Please note that we are rather an informal network of public officers representing their respective capital cities and regions in Brussels. Therefore we have no any employees, budget and meet mostly to exchange information. The member organizations of CCRN represent public service providers too (the member municipalities of CCRN are in charge of public transport, territorial development, social services, health care, etc.), we support representatives of public service providers with information, make the necessary connections with the different DGs. Members of CCRN are mostly final beneficiaries of cohesion policy .
