Mission & Interests

Goals: Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization founded in 2017 in reaction to the ongoing genocide of the Uyghur people being perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party in East Turkistan (now known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China). Our mission is to counter the Uyghur genocide by exposing the Chinese Communist Party, activating global grassroots organizations and civil societies, building solidarity with other persecuted communities, and enabling the Uyghur diaspora to construct productive campaigns to raise awareness and impact policy. In recognition of our efforts, Campaign for Uyghurs was awarded the World Democracy Courage Tribute in July 2021 and was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. CFU advocates and promotes human rights and democratic freedoms for Uyghurs, and mobilize the international community to act to stop the human rights atrocity in East Turkistan. CFU works with groups all over the world.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: CFU cooperates with international organizations, governments, and advocacy groups worldwide to push for comprehensive actions and policies that address the Uyghur crisis effectively. CFU engages in lobbying efforts, specifically targeting the EU and European Parliament, with a focus on the proposed EU Forced Labour Regulation. One of their key activities involves meeting with Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to inform them about the worsening circumstances in East Turkistan and to advocate for European intervention to improve the situation. The CFU concentrates on EU foreign policy, particularly its interaction with China, urging for the inclusion of human rights considerations and the raising of the Uyghur issue. Campaign for Uyghurs (CFU) has identified two main EU legislative proposals or policies for targeting to address the issue of Uyghur forced labor. CFU's primary focus is on Directive 2011/36/EU of the European Parliament on preventing and combating trafficking in human beings and protecting its victims. CFU is deeply concerned about Uyghurs being trafficked throughout China to work in factories under exploitative conditions. CFU believe that implementing and enforcing Directive 2011/36/EU in relation to the People's Republic of China (PRC) government is crucial in addressing this issue. CFU advocates for strict compliance with the directive regarding any goods entering the EU market that may be linked to Uyghur forced labor. CFU propose that if the supply chain of these goods is tainted with such labor, they should be banned from entering the EU. In addition to Directive 2011/36/EU, CFU also focuses on the Proposal for a Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence and amending Directive (EU) 2019/1937. CFU sees this proposal as an opportunity to strengthen corporate responsibility and accountability regarding supply chains, particularly in relation to companies operating in or trading with China. CFU emphasize the importance of incorporating measures that address Uyghur forced labor within this directive. By targeting these legislative proposals, CFU aims to draw attention to the issue of Uyghur forced labor, advocate for its eradication in supply chains, and ensure that the EU takes appropriate action. The ultimate goal is to create policies that effectively safeguard the rights and well-being of Uyghur individuals and prevent their exploitation through forced labor.
Communication Activities: Campaign For Uyghurs (CFU) actively engages in various communication activities related to EU policies concerning the Uyghur issue. CFU organize events and campaigns to inform and advocate for their cause among the European audience, and regularly meet with Members of the European Parliament to raise awareness and garner support. CFU also produces reports and publications to highlight human rights violations faced by the Uyghur people, and conducts awareness campaigns to urge the EU to prioritize the Uyghur issue in their relations with China. Overall, their communication activities serve as channels for bringing attention to and calling for action on the Uyghur crisis from the EU.
