Mission & Interests

Goals: The Brussels International Center is an independent, non-profit, think-and-do tank based in the capital of Europe that is committed to developing solutions to address the cyclical drivers of insecurity, economic fragility, and conflict the Middle East and North Africa. BIC works to identify and explore underlying historical, economic, social, and political drivers behind today’s multidimensional and global challenges, and uses this research to provide forward-thinking, pragmatic, and concrete analyses to policy-makers, governments, and civil society. We bring added value to the highest levels of political discourse by bringing systemic issues to the forefront of the conversation.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: - EU Climate Law in European Green Deal - FIT for 55 - EU critical raw materials act - Strategic Compass - EU legislative framework for fighting corruption - EU migration deal
Communication Activities: Despite the continued challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, BIC continued to provide insightful analysis on global challenges for policy-makers, partners, and the public between 2021 and the start of 2022. In the past year, BIC launched a new podcast, MENA Talks, and continued its flagship project, “Rethinking Security in the 2020s,” which aims to develop proactive solutions to the evolving nature of insecurity, hybrid warfare, and COVID-19. BIC promoted this research and analysis by publishing over 25 research papers, and organizing 4 high-level conferences, which facilitated constructive dialogue between policy-makers, civil society, international organizations. This year, BIC developed valuable new partnerships, including with the Millennium Film Festival, which aims to highlight film makers who promote the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The BIC in conjunction with the Egmont Institute has been organizing high level discussions on Afghanistan on issues such as security and human rights, and how the international community, especially the European Union and United Nations, should respond. These recommendations were taken forward by the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Afghanistan, and following the event, the BIC produced an in-depth policy paper with key recommendations for the European Union and UN leaders.
