Mission & Interests

Goals: Boroume (“We Can”) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to reduce food waste and to fight malnutrition in Greece. Through our “Saving & Offering Food” program we save food on a daily basis from many sources and we offer it to charities that help people who are facing food insecurity. Starting in 2011, today we save & offer the equivalent of more than 35.000 portions of food on a daily basis. Since the beginning of our action we have saved & offered more than 80 million portions of food to hundreds of welfare organizations and charities all over Greece. We approach the issue of food waste holistically through the following programs: • “Stop Food Waste”: increasing awareness about food waste • “Boroume at School”: educational program • “Boroume Gleaning”: reducing food waste on the field • “Boroume at the Farmers’: gleaning program • “National Alliance Against Food Waste": the Greek voluntary agreement aiming to reduce food waste • “No Food Waste" certification

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Collaborating with European Commision through our membership at the EU Platform for Food Losses and Food Waste

Communication Activities: Substantial contribution towards changing the VAT payment rule on donated food at national (Greek) level in 2014 Co-organizing first festival on food waste (2014) Co-orzanizing Feeding 5k in Thessaloniki (2014) and Athens (2015) as well as Disco Soups Our website is one of the main sources of food waste information in Greece Close collaboration with Greek Ministry of Enviroment regarding the incorporation of Directive 851 into national law Collaboration with Greek Ministry of Environment regarding their auspices and support of the National Alliance Against Food Waste which Boroume is coordinating (and has created) Several online awareness raising campaigns at national level (Greece)
