Mission & Interests

Goals: Biocat is a strategic stakeholder and catalyst for building, promoting and projecting the Catalan life sciences and healthcare ecosystem, known as the BioRegion of Catalonia. Biocat was established in 2006 as a public-private foundation at the behest of the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona City Council to identify the needs of the BioRegion and implement a strategy and action plan to maximize the economic and social impact of life sciences and healthcare innovation in Catalonia. Main focal points of Biocat’s strategy: Accelerating technology transfer and business growth by promoting activities to boost the sector’s capacities; Projecting the ecosystem, in order to position the BioRegion as one of the main healthcare innovation hubs in Europe; Fostering entrepreneurs and researchers’ innovative capacities and talent development; and Bringing together the ecosystem’s stakeholders with international players to generate synergies and opportunities for growth and scaling up.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: Biocat is mainly interested in the 4 political priorities of the EU, in particular those aimed at Developing a solid and dynamic economic base, Building a climate-neutral, ecological, fair and social Europe, and Promoting European interests and values in the world. Specifically, among the EC's stratgic priorities, Biocat is interested in the European Green Deal, the twin -sustainable and digital - transformation, resilience, technological sovereignty, and innovation with social impact. It is also interested in initiatives related to the Recovery Plan for Europe. Biocat is interested in EC actions in the following areas: Business and Industry (create a business-friendly environment, promote entrepreneurship, improve access to new markets, facilitate access to finance, provide access to information services and data on a free, full and open basis), Climate Action (Green Deal related to health industries), Digital Economy and Societies (Digital Europe Programme, Europe's Digital Decade), Research and Innovation (Horizon Europe), and Public Health (HERA, EMA, EHDS , EU4Health, Health-EU).
Communication Activities: Biocat follows-up EC's policies and initiatives on those areas in order to inspire the trends and programs / projects of the entity to better support the agents of Catalonia's Life sciences and Healthcare Ecosystem, the BioRegion. Blog posts, news and interviews reflecting these policies and initiatives are regularly published on the Biocat website (for example, https://www.biocat.cat/en/current-news/blog/seeking-sustainability-health-sector , or https://www.biocat.cat/en/current-news/blog/data-and-health-indissoluble-binomial) Biocat partners or coordinates EU-funded projects (Horizon Europe, COSME, Interreg...) aimed at reducing the innovation divide among European regions, and at increasing Biocat's capacity to respond to sectoral challenges, and strengthening and promoting competitiveness across Europe.
