Mission & Interests

Goals: Associazione Luca Coscioni per la libertà di ricerca scientifica (Luca Coscioni Association for Freedom of Scientific Research, ALC) is named after its former president and founder, Luca Coscioni, who died in 2006 after having suffered for ten years from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). ALC is a non-profit organization counting thousands of members, a wide network of supporters including MPs, academics, researchers, along with representatives of patients and advocacy associations, all active in our campaigns, from Rome to Boston. Our main objectives are: - the promotion of freedom of scientific research and cure; - the promotion of projects and technologies for an "Independent Living"; - the ascertainment of civil and political rights of patients and people with disabilities. - the promotion of the right to science and evidence-based decision-making processes - the organisation of the World Congress for freedom of scientific research since 2004.

Activities

Main EU Legislative Proposals: - Horizon Europe framework programme for research and innovation 2021–2027, Specific programme implementing Horizon Europe framework programme for research and innovation 2021–2027, Resolution on use of cannabis for medicinal purposes (and its follow-up), Multiannual financial framework for the years 2021 to 2027, Strengthening the rule of law within the Union - A blueprint for action, Resolution on climate change – a European strategic long-term vision for a prosperous, modern, competitive and climate neutral economy in accordance with the Paris Agreement (and its follow-up). - Members of the organisation participated in the EU Commission request for feedback on the Democracy Action Plan through our partner organisation EUMANS - Associazione Luca Coscioni had been among the key promoters of the Petition to the European Parliament 329/2020 (Also known as EU CAN DO IT Petition) on the needs for coordinated management of the Covid19 crisis, social, economic and climatic crisis - Associazione Luca Coscioni was among the promoters of the European Citizens Initiative Stopglobalwarming.eu - A price on carbon to fight climate change. Among the activities co-organised to carry on this initiative the Treasurer of Associazione Luca Coscioni organised and attended meetings with the Cabinet of Mr Timmermans during the preparation of the Fit for 55 Package. - Associazione Luca Coscioni worked in collaboration with its partner organisation EUMANS on the Conference on the Future of Europe process In general, the Associazione Luca Coscioni is interested in activities related to research, innovation in agriculture, patients’ and disability rights. The next Horizon Europe framework programme and the next MFF are of particular interest in terms of the financing of research. In addition, ALC follows developments related to the state of the rule of law in the EU and general initiatives in the field of climate change.
Communication Activities: Members of our Association supported and promoted the organisation of a sortition based Citizens' Assembly in the framework of the EU Project: 101081332 — TEA — CERV-2022-CITIZENS-CIV Members of our Association attended the "European Citizens' Initiative - draft technical specifications for individual online collection systems - stakeholders' meeting" on 9 September 2019 in Brussels. Members of our Association took part in the Public Hearing of the Petition 329/2020 to the European Parliament Members of our Association and partner organisation (Science for Democracy) are involved in Erasmus+ Funded project P-Cube Members of our Association are among the promoters of proposals on the platform for the Conference on the Future of Europe Marco Cappato, treasurer of Associazione Luca Coscioni, collaborated with MEP Sophie In't'veld to the letter to the President of the European Commission titled: Raising crucial issues regarding end of life treatments, in particular with a focus on: Collecting qualitative data to inform policy-makers, EU Funding to cover all voices and choices of Europeans, Starting a dialogue with civil society, The portability of the living will, The freedom of circulation of patients within the EU for end of life treatments
