Mission & Interests
Goals: MedCities is a network of Mediterranean cities and metropolitan areas created in Barcelona in November 1991 at the initiative of the Mediterranean Environmental Technical Assistance Programme (METAP). Medcities Works in urban sustainable development with the following objectives: 1)To develop the awareness of interdependence and common responsibility as regard policies of sustainable urban development, environmental conservation and social cohesion of the Mediterranean basin. 2) To reinforce the role, competences and resources (institutional, financial and technical) of local governments in the adoption and implementation of sustainable urban development policies. 3)To develop citizens’ awareness and involvement in the sustainable development of their towns and cities. 4)To get under way and develop projects and partnership between partners and with other associations.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: Medcities is primarily interested in EU policies as the European Neighborhood Policy, the European Cohesion Policy and other sectorial policies and actions related to urban development such as Environment, Energy, Transport and Mobility, Employment, Culture, Tourism, Youth, Equaling Opportunities, etc. As a Mediterranean organization Medcities is participating in ARLEM and works with the UfM Secretariat in urban issues.
Communication Activities: -BLUEMISSIONMED (2023-2025): Inspire, inform, assess, mobilise, connect and empower all the actors that can take a role in preventing and eliminating pollution in the Mediterranean sea and wàters
- MAIS (2022-2026): Active and intelligent mobility in Sfax (Tunisia) and it will do so through innovative actions that will be based on giving support to the Municipality of Sfax in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of all project activities as well as the financial management.
- ENSERES (2021-2023): Mainstream available EBM tools in ICZM processes for preserving coastal and marine ecosystems as sustainable livelihoods for coastal urban communities through integrated management of human activities - MED4WASTE (2021-2023): Building on and improving existing knowledge to foster capitalisation of social innovative, integrated, and efficient practices from public, private and social sectors in waste management across the MSB
- LASERMED (2021-2023): Strengthen the role and capacities of local governments to favor a long-term recovery of the citizens’ living conditions - ValEUr-Gabes (2020-2023): Valuation of urbain water through innovative actions and instruments - ASIMA Tunis (2020-2023): Strategic plan of Tunis
- MITECO Andalucia (2019-2021): Development of Coastal Protection Strategies considering the climate change effects for the provinces of Cádiz, Málaga and Almería
- RevActe (2019-2020): Strengthening the capacities of Tunisian Municipalities to implement energy transition actions through networking and transfer of experiences - TangerAccueil (2019-2020): Promote access for newcomers and migrants to their rights and services and to facilitate their social integration.
- TER-BRAND (2019-2020): Ecotourism promotion and territorial branding in Lebanon - Urban Transport Community (2019-2022): Achieving tailor-made sustainable urban mobility plans and solutions in the Mediterranean area. Cofinanced by the EU MED Programme
- Biodiversity Protection Community (2019-2022): Mainstreaming management efforts for environmental sustainability and increasing the impact of biodiversity protection projects towards common identified strategic targets. Cofinanced by the EU MED Programme
- InCircle (2019-2022): Capitalizing knowledge and available tools to test a new methodology that will apply the principles of circular economy to the tourism sector, with a focus on the peculiar needs of islands and low-density areas. Cofinanced by the EU MED Programme
- Bluefasma (2019-2022): Empowering innovation capacity of SMEs and maritime networks in MED islands and coastal areas to support blue circular economy growth in fishing/aquaculture. Cofinanced by the EU MED Programme
- Madre Project (2016-2018) in the field of metropolitan agriculture and cofinanced by the EU MED Programme
- PANACEA Project (2016-2019) in the field of the conservation and protection of mediterranean natural and preserved areas and cofinanced by the EU MED Programme.
