Mission & Interests
Goals: ABD is an NGO born in the 80s and designated a public service by the Spanish government. ABD provides programs and services that offer solutions to situations that generate vulnerability and social exclusion.
Our mission is to manage and coordinate processes focused on people’s empowerment while enhancing their autonomy. We support people throughout their lives, preventing them from socially vulnerable situations, assisting their needs, getting society involved and promoting a socially cohesive society.
ABD is structured in four main intervention’s areas:
- Drugs Addiction
- Poverty and Inclusion
- Childhood and family care
- Socio-health
Under ABD’s umbrella, we are developing more than 105 programs and services, attending more than 100.000 people per year. ABD supports families, children, women, migrants, elderly people, drug users, among others, in order to help them build their own life projects in an autonomous and dignified way.

Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: At a European level, ABD in the last years has implemented an internationalization strategy that has resulted in the leadership of an EU Health Programme (2012-NEWIP Nightlife Empowerment and Well-being Implementation Project) and afterwards the management of the Trans European Drug Information (TEDI) workgroup. ABD has also participated in the Consortium of another EU Health Programme (2006-2011-Democracy, Cities and Drugs "safer nightlife"); three Erasmus+ KA2 (2015- Connecting and Improving peer intervention in nightlife settings on EU level Project/2016-MythWORK/ 2017-Tech-Ability); an AMIF project (2018-Food Relations), two Justice Projects (2016-Predciting risk of emerging drugs within silico and clinical toxicology Project/2017-Solidify) and an ESF Agency (2018-Social Economy for Care). As a result of it, the Nightlife Empowerment & Well-being Network (NEWNet) was created.
In the last years, ABD has consolidated its role as a leading partner entity within the system of European Consortia, working in partnership with organisations and administrations from other countries.
The European projects that ABD has joined as a Partner in the last years are:
- COPE and HOPE. Practical approaches fostering social integration of TCN women victims of trafficking
- EU3Digital. Developing a strategic European framework for digital competencies for adult education organisations
- MUMS at WORK. Enhancing social integration and employability of Migrant Mothers
- CoolTORise. Rising summer energy poverty awareness to reduce cooling needs
- Youth+ for social inclusion: development of youth workers for long-term engagement of self-governed groups of youth with fewer opportunities to carry out own initiatives
- SCANNER. Understanding the dynamics and consequences of New Psychoactive Substances use in a rapidly changing (online) drug market
- BOOST Project. Boost access and quality of community-based communicable disease services for PWUD in the EU and neighbouring countries
- Care4Trauma. Improving GBV victims support services and the access to justice through Trauma-informed care
- GLOBAL DISTRICTS - Localised and Informal Critical Global Citizenship Education for Wider Inclusion and Engagement of European Youth in Local and Global Challenges
- POWER - Promoting Organisations' empoWErment to guarantee women’s human Rights and stop gender violence
- EDU4SDGS - Building a Comprehensive Educational Ecosystem for Sustainable Development Goals
ABD has also positioned itself as a coordinator entity, leading the following projects:
- FASHION for INCLUSION. Training and labor inclusion through an ethical, intercultural and social fashion
- CUT ALL TIES. Innovation to foster critical thinking tackling gender-based violence on youth affective sexual relationships
- LILA. Integrated one-stop support service aimed at women survivors of GVB and their children to tackle the needs arising from the Covid-19 crisis.
- CRISSCROSS. Intervention program in nightlife, leisure and socialization venues to raise awareness and prevent GBV behaviours - including LGBTIphobia - linked to sexual violence and substance use.
- EU Food Security. Tackling food insecurity promoting sustainable and socially inclusive food and agriculture ecosystems
- Home4Health. Increasing capacities of professionals and organisations caring for homeless people facing health issues and traumas.
- POWGEN - POWER GENERATION. Strengthening Labor Market Integration in Europe through Sustainable Employment Opportunities for Third-Country Nationals in the Renewable Energy and Refurbishment Sectors
Communication Activities: In the area of drugs/addiction, in 2017 ABD was invited to participate in twenty-six international symposiums including: the 60th edition of Commission of Narcotic Drugs (ATS, Austria); the 25th Harm reduction International (HRI, Canada); 2° International Congress on Problematic Drug Consumption (Quilmes City Council, Argentina); XIX Iberoamerican seminar on drugs and cooperation (RIOD, Costa Rica), among others.
ABD collaborated in the assessment of preventive and assistance programs and drug policies through agreements with organizations and international platforms in both Europe and Latin America.

ABD has published the following articles to boost and maintain its programs innovation:
-The American Journal of Drug & Alcohol Abuse. Patterns of use, harm reduction strategies and their relation to risk behaviour and harm in recreational ketamine users.
-Addictive Behaviours. Reliability, validity and cut-off score of the Severity of Dependence Scale for recreational ketamine users.
-Drug Testing and Analysis. Drug testing in Europe: monitoring results of the Trans European Drug Information (TEDI) project.
-Forensic Science International. Crystals and tablets in the Spanish ecstasy market 2000-2014: Are they the same or different in terms of purity and adulteration?
-International Journal of Drug Policy. Results of an International drug testing service for cryptomarket users.
-International Journal of Drug Policy. The hidden web and the fentanyl problem: Detection of ocfentanil as an adulterant in heroin.
At the National level, ABD has monitored and implemented the following drug policies:
-Les Corts – Campaign – YO for education and prevention in the consumption of alcohol and other drugs (Les Corts District – Barcelona City Hall )
-Manlleu – Diagnostic study and design of a municipal prevention plan (Diputación de Barcelona)
-Baix Montseny - Diagnostic study for the elaboration of a supra-municipal plan for the prevention of drug addiction (Tritó)
-No Seguees Ase – Awareness campaign to prevent the abusive consumption of alcohol at parties. Ibiza (PADIB)
- Acción Botellón – Reduction of risks associated with the abusive consumption of alcohol in large bottles in Madrid ( City of Madrid)
-Info-drugs Mollet – Counselling service on drug issues aimed at adolescents, young people, families and professionals. Early detection, referrals and preventive activities (Mollet City Council)
At the International level, ABD was responsible of:
-City Council of Medellín with TRANS-MET – Bridging the experience in risk and harm reduction services to Medellín (Colombia)
