Activities
Main EU Legislative Proposals: SN follows many EU initiatives, policies, and legislative files undertaken by DG HOME, about the reception, integration, and returns of third-country nationals, such as the latest EU Pact on migration and asylum. In particular, the implementation of the EU Directives that comprise the Common European Asylum System. SN also follows policy developments in the field of Child Protection, for example, the implementation of the Commission Communication on the Protection of Children in Migration. As well as initiatives are undertaken by the European Parliament about the criminalization of solidarity and illegal push-backs. SN is also following initiatives related to education and specifically inclusive education and initiatives addressing challenges for Roma populations and access to the labor market.
Communication Activities: Milestones for 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023:
In 2019, we organised the Roundtable Conference “Child Protection & EU Funding for migrant populations in Greece: A reality check and the way forward” where child protection experts and migration stakeholders (Greek authorities, EU institutions, civil society actors and international non-governmental organisations) met in Athens to discuss EU funding, the reception systems and integration perspectives of children in migration in Greece.
SolidarityNow also supported two humanitarian volunteers, Sara Mardini and Seán Binder when they were arrested for helping people arriving safely to Lesbos islands, throughout their detention, surrounding their defence with advocacy efforts in Greece and beyond.
In 2020, SN published a country report on the impact of COVID-19 on labour market integration of asylum seekers and refugees.
In 2021, SN along with other NGOs in Northern Greece and the Municipality of Thessaloniki organised a Career Day dedicated to migrants and refugees.
In 2021, SN, following the instructions of the National Public Health Organisation and of the Greek Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, with the support of IOM Greece, created simple and comprehensible videos with instructions for the proper use of self-tests for all children, translated into 8 different languages.
SN’s Legal team prepared an article dedicated to the issue of legal gender recognition, an issue unacknowledged until recently by the Greek legislation and legal procedures.
In 2021, a Joint Press Release of 27 organizations was issued echoing EU Commissioner’s calls on Greek authorities to ensure that all people have full access to their rights and receive basic means of subsistence.
27 NGOs warned with a joint press release for the halt to cash assistance for asylum seekers, and
the denial of food support to recognized refugees and rejected asylum seekers that creates a hunger crisis in Greece.
293 Civil Society Organisations co-signed and sent to the Greek Prime Minister, the Government, and the Parliament a joint memorandum on the draft law of the Ministry of Interior "Civil Society Organisations, voluntary employment and other provisions".
The Legal Service of SN sent a report to the Greek Ombudsman presenting cases of people-beneficiaries of the Service who lost their opportunity to claim asylum due to the surprising programming of the meetings on behalf of the Asylum Service who caused them to lose the chance to be accompanied by their lawyer and thus secure the protection of their rights.
In 2021, SolidarityNow along with other 39 NGOs published a joint press release requesting the withdrawal of the Joint Ministerial Decision that characterized Turkey as a “safe third country”.
In 2022, SolidarityNow conducted a survey on the vaccination status of refugees and migrants, while also published a guide for first line professionals working with LGBTI refugees.
In 2023, (January) SolidarityNow organized a transnational conference on migrant's children transition to adulthood, as part of an EU funded project implemented together with Council of Europe, Special secretariat for the protection of unaccompanied minors, NIDOS and CEPAIM, while on March 2023 organized a conference on the prevention of trafficking of human beings as part of the EEA Grants financial mechanism.
In 2023, (March) SolidarityNow organized a regional conference on human trafficking in the context of forced migration, with representatives from GRETA, and various NGOs and other entities across Europe.
